Jennifer Lopez Disregards Qatar Rights Abuses and Takes the Money

Jennifer Lopez Disregards Qatar Rights Abuses and Takes the Money

Why We Should All Be Concerned About Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways, well known for their “five-star” service, has become highly recognized for their blatant rights violations against the women that work for the airline. Now they’re coming to Georgia and Atlanta is rolling out the red carpet for them. Promoting competition is good; condonation of abuse is not.

JLO Tells Women ” I Ain’t Your Mama!”

Jennifer Lopez is in the middle of a controversy that’s erupted in Atlanta over her performance at a private concert for Qatar Airways to an audience at the Fox Theatre which was filled with “Atlanta social, civic and philanthropic leaders“. Human rights organizations have been pleading with Lopez to back out of her agreement to perform for Qatar and stand up against human rights abuses. She went on with the show anyway. This is not the first time Jennifer Lopez has entered into agreements to perform for known human rights violators.

We thought for a moment that Delta did the right thing when they pulled their sponsorship from the Fox Theater.  Later they clarified that the decision was based on disparaging comments made about Delta by the CEO of Qatar Airways rather than concern for the way Qatar treats its employees. The Fox Theatre responded: “As we are not in tune with the industry politics of our sponsors, we are disheartened to learn that Delta has chosen to penalize the Fox Theatre for our decision to rent the venue to another airline”

Delta currently has its own labor controversy involving its practice of allowing harassing, bullying and demeaning customer comments to be passed on to employees.

Qatar Offers Free Trip to Silence Union Leader

The International President of the Association of Flight Attendants, Sara Nelson, reached out to Jennifer Lopez via Twitter asking her to stand up for women and cancel her performance. She was immediately contact by Qatar Airways with a very attractive offer. Here is how Sara described it in her follow up letter to JLO:

“After attempting to alert you to this issue through Twitter last week, Qatar Airways reached out to me within 12 hours and offered to host me at the concert, assuring me these “issues” were in the past. I asked that they find an openly gay Qatar crew to invite me to the event, but there has been no response. It is offensive that these people think everyone is for sale and it reinforces the depth of wrongdoing at Qatar Airways.” — Sara Nelson, AFA

Inside the Qatar Event

Quick Qatar Facts:

Nation of Qatar

  • Being LGBT is illegal, punishable by up to 5 years in prison
  • Other selected sexual relations are punishable by flogging; adultery results in 100 lashes
  • Labor unions are illegal in Qatar
  • HIV+ status results in immediate termination

Qatar Airways

  • Flight attendants are often denied exit visas from Qatar if they’ve received discipline
  • Qatar provides mandatory housing which is highly restrictive. All movements are monitored with card key swipes
  • Accommodations are searched while crew members are flying trips
  • Pregnancy results in termination
  • Flight attendants must remain single for at least five years and then request permission to marry, which may be denied along with an exit visa from Qatar

Lured by glossy, glamorous advertising campaigns by Qatar, applicants are often unaware of what lies ahead in a career with Qatar Airways until it’s too late. Sometimes their only escape is leaving the airline during layover; sometimes without their passports.
